about

People often say vaporwave tries to imitate the sounds of a skipping cd. Well, this is a vaporwave album (broken transmission style) made entirely out of actual skipping cds! Inspired by artists like Oval and Yasunao Tone, I burned cdrs of music which were prepared and intentionally damaged in various ways, then played them out on an old 1980's cd player with poor anti-skip protection.

The cds skipped in extremely unpredictable ways, and rarely would skip in the right spots that I wanted them to skip at first, this took hours and hours of messing with the cds and the cd player, I often had to gently hit the cd player with my hands to advance the skipping so it wouldn't stay in the same spot for minutes, and had to re-prepare and re-burn new cdrs many times (if I damaged them too little they would hardly skip at all, and if I did it too much the cd player wouldn't read the disc.)

Some light effects and manipulations were added after recording the skipping cds, but all of the skipping sounds are from the cds skipping themselves. When the cd gets caught in a skipping loop, there are often subtle variations to the skips, despite appearing the same at first, for instance it will often create an odd subtle phased effect or sorta drop out ish wow and flutter type effect, and the more noticeable changes in the rhythmic pop and click type noises it creates, this is far more noticeable if you listen to it with a good pair of headphones. By using damaged physical media, this album quite literally puts the term "broken" in broken transmission. This album was intended to create a very hypnotic, entrancing, almost meditative, yet also confusing and sometimes dark sound experience. Listen to it in the right state of mind.
